Location of the camp: Nkuringo Gorilla Camp is situated bordering Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (the home of mountain Gorillas). The Camp stands on the slopes of Nteko ridge at 2161m above the sea level. Nteko ridge provides a superb vantage across the Kashasha river valley to the breathtaking, conical peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes, and the surrounding canopy of the Bwindi Forest, home to the endangered mountain gorilla.
This section of forest is home to the Nkuringo group of Mountain Gorillas from where the camp provides a prime access point to the start of this amazing activity. The camp has panoramic views of the majestic volcanoes of the Virunga chain and across the escarpment into the Albertine Rift Valley within the DR Congo.
The Camp also offers walking safaris through the forest to the village of Buhoma, and guests will enjoy birding as well as meeting our friendly Bakiga, Bafumbira and Batwa neighbors.
Our accommodation includes en-suite cottages, bandas, rooms, tents and a campsite for those who travel with their own tents. We also have a small restaurant serving locally sourced food, and self-catering facilities, so we can welcome guests of all budgets and tastes.
A lucky few visitors will observe the clouds envelop the forested valley below the camp and be party to views to the north as far as the glaciers on the Rwenzori peaks some 160 kms distant. In January 2010 visitors where thrilled to witness not one but two active volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo from Nkuringo area. The erupted volcanoes include Nyiragongo and Nyimuragira continued to light up the night sky on clear evenings for the intrepid travelers to Nkuringo.
Nkuringo Gorilla Camp is located in Southern Bwindi National Park, about 8-10hours drive from Kampala, 2 hours from Kabale town and about 1 hour from Kisoro town. The fact the roads in the area are very poor, a 4×4 vehicle is recommended especially in rainy when roads are impassable.
Nkuringo Gorilla Camp can also be accessed from Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda because it is not far from the boarder. From Kigali, it is only 4-5hours drive through Katuna or Cyanika boarders. From Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), it is less than 90 minutes drive. This means one can combine gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda with a opportunity to track gorillas twice in both countries because both gorill homes are close to each other. A wide variety of gorilla tour packages available online combining Uganda and Rwanda as well as other East African countries.
