Mountain gorilla trekking is now ranked as one of the world’s most interesting holiday activities in Africa because it is a critically endangered species with only 880 individuals left in the whole world. This is according to the gorilla census of 2011 that showed that about 440 individuals are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda. This is almost half of the world’s total population! The remaining gorilla population is distributed between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Due to the fact that mountain gorillas are at risk of extinction, many conservation organizations came up to join the effort to conserve this population. To see gorillas in the wild, you need to book a gorilla permit, that acts as a permission to enter the forest for a guided walk to search for gorillas in their natural habitat. A gorilla permit in Rwanda costs US Dollars 750, and US dollars 600 in Uganda. DR Congo is cheaper but gorilla tourism in Congo is hindered by some political unrest.
The number of gorilla permits available per day is limited, therefore, you are advised to pre-book your trip to Africa and reserve your gorilla permit in advance. A maximum of 8 persons is allowed to visit each gorilla group. This aims at reducing the risks of degrading the vegetation cover of their habitat.
